IBM increases its in-kind support of TerraFly to $7.4 Million

IBM granted TerraFly today an additional p620 Unix server farm, bringing its total in-kind support to date to $7.4 million. This is the second year in a row that TerraFly wins IBM's SUR award."IBM is pleased to work with FIU to advance their IT infrastructure and initiatives on a national level and we look forward to continuing our mutually beneficial relationship", said IBM's General Manager for pSeries servers, Adalio Sanchez, former FIU graduate.

TerraFly is a new Internet-based technology that makes it possible for users to "fly over" vast land areas using only an ordinary Web browser. By using high-resolution imagery collected by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and other sources, users can experience an overhead view of almost any location in the United States at a one-meter resolution-without the expense of standard GIS application software. The project, which is funded by NASA, the National Science Foundation, and IBM, can be accessed on the Web at http://www.terrafly.com.
